Longan (Dragon’s Eye) Description
The Longan (Dimocarpus longan) is a highly prized tropical fruit native to Asia, closely related to the lychee and rambutan. This fruit is often called the “dragon’s eye” because of its distinctive appearance when shelled: the dark, glossy black seed is visible through the translucent white flesh (aril), perfectly mimicking an eyeball. The fruit grows in hanging clusters on a tall, evergreen tree and is typically round, about the size of a large grape, encased in a thin, light-brown, leathery shell that is easy to peel when fully ripe.
